Do you know that your old phone knows too much?

Selling, exchanging or discarding an old phone without properly erasing it can expose your photographs, messages, contacts, emails, saved passwords, financial information and personal documents.

Your phone may also contain logged-in social media accounts, banking apps, browser history, autofill details, identity documents, private notes, cloud-storage access, authentication apps and years of personal conversations. Even information you believe you deleted may still remain in app folders, recently deleted folders, memory cards or connected cloud accounts.

A new owner, repair technician or recycler could potentially access this information if the device has not been prepared correctly. The risk is not limited to privacy. Stored information can be used for identity theft, account takeover, impersonation, financial fraud or targeted scams against you and your contacts.

Simply deleting individual files is not enough. Before giving away the phone, all accounts, connected services, storage cards and security settings must be handled carefully, followed by a complete factory reset.

Before giving away an old phone:

  • Back up only the data you need.
    • Sign out of all accounts.
    • Remove SIM and memory cards.
    • Disable device tracking and account locks.
    • Perform a complete factory reset.
    • Check that no personal data remains before handing it over.

Your old phone can become someone else’s access point to your digital life.
