The Kolkata police recently highlighted the effects of online abuse and showed people how they won’t stand up to harassment.
On November 4, the police force’s Twitter team shared a story of how a woman had been harassed on Facebook by someone she had befriended. She then went ahead and registered a police complaint.
The accused, identified as Swarnangshu Mukopadhyay, realised that she had filed a complaint and promptly deleted his profile.
But while the internet is a large place, even if you delete data, you will eventually be traced. It took the cops a couple of days, but they eventually nabbed the accused and booked him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67A of the Information Technology Act.
The Kolkata police have also started a campaign against online harassment, calling it #Sharewithoutfear
