BEWARE DEEPFAKE CALLS! #AAH

Imagine that you answer audio or video call from an unknown number and surprisingly its a loved one, family, friend, colleague saying that they are sick or met with an accident, or in trouble. They could be crying, distressed. They could request some money for calling an ambulance or transportation. Their phone was ofcourse damaged in the incident so it needs to be done on this temporary passer by persons phone.

What would your immediate response be? Of course you will transfer the money first and also rush to the spot of emergency and shared with you.

Stop! Think! Breathe!

Unfortunately, this could be an AI enabled call which is simply duplicating the voice of the person known to you. If ou transfer the money it could be lost forever & if you rush to the spot then you could be putting your life in danger!!

“An AI-based deep fake call is a scam which uses AI to make fake audio or video recordings of people. Fraudsters can make the calls by faking themselves as a friend or a family member to cheat the other person into giving money or any key information.

A deepfake is made using a technique called facial re-enactment. The technique involves using AI to map the facial movements of one person onto the face of another via audio or video recording. The process can been achieved convincingly, which makes it hard to recognise whether call recording is real or fake.”

Fake AI generated voice calls are a big growing scam!!

Here are a few safety tips that can protect you-

Check authenticity of calls from unknown numbers

Be suspicious of any calls from anyone you don’t know or you don’t expect a call from. If someone claims to be a friend or is known to you but you are not sure of the person’s identity, then ask a personal question to verify.

Clearly state that you are informing the police

Even if the voice is sounds familiar, it could be AI generated

People are getting duped by such calls where someone known is allegedly asking for some urgent money transfer

If they call you to an unfamiliar location, do not rush without proper checks

  • AI can generate voice forms that are pretty close to someone you know. Protect yourself from any frauds & assaults.

PLEASE TEACH YOUR PARENTS, ELDERLY- THEY ARE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO SUCH SCAMS. CREATE SAFE WORDS/ PHRASE WITHIN FAMILY TO ENSURE IDENTIFICATION IN SUCH TIMES.

Stay Aware, Stay Safe.

Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!
