Online games are no longer just play.

They are the new hunting grounds for predators. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar recently revealed that his 13-year-old daughter was approached by a stranger on a gaming platform who asked her to send nude photos (Times of India). This real case underlines the danger: predators are hiding inside games children play every day.

How Predators Operate in Games:

  • Friendly Entry:They begin with harmless chat—compliments, casual gaming talk.
  • Testing Boundaries:They ask personal questions: “Are you a girl?”, “Where do you live?”, “Are you alone?”
  • Escalation:They move from game chat to private requests, asking for images or videos.
  • Pressure & Secrecy:Children are told to keep it “a secret” or risk losing a friendship.
  • Blackmail:Once any content is shared, it is used to threaten, shame, or extort.

Roblox: A Special Case
Roblox is not just a game—it is a vast social platform with unique risks. It has whisper chat and private communication features that allow strangers to move conversations away from public view into hidden chats, bypassing moderation. (cybersafetyconsulting.com)

In one case, a 9-year-old child was groomed inside Roblox chat and then pressured to continue on Discord, where explicit demands followed (ABC News). Researchers have also called out “deeply disturbing” risks in Roblox chatrooms that remain inadequately monitored (The Guardian).

This makes Roblox a prime target for predators who exploit its popularity with children, while parents assume it is “just another game.”

Warning Signs Parents Must Watch:

  • Children using headphones and hiding chats.
  • Switching screens quickly when approached.
  • Mood swings or withdrawal after gaming.
  • Requests for in-game gifts or money from “friends.”
  • Invitations to join private chats or move to external apps.

What Parents Must Do:

  • Disable stranger chatfeatures wherever possible.
  • Explain grooming tacticsclearly so children know the red flags.
  • Set gaming rules:only in shared spaces, with time limits.
  • Monitor account activity:friend lists, chats, in-game invites.
  • Report predators immediatelyon cybercrime.gov.in and to the gaming platform.
  • Save screenshots, IDs, and chat logsas evidence for authorities.

Why This Matters:
Predators no longer need to stalk physical spaces—they sit inside the games your children are playing. Awareness and parental vigilance are the only shields against this silent threat.
