Teen Boys Are the New Sextortion Targets
A silent crisis is unfolding—teenage boys in India are increasingly being targeted in sextortion scams. Scammers, posing as girls or influencers, approach boys via Instagram, gaming chats, or Discord. Within hours, they trap them in sexually charged conversations, demand explicit content, and immediately flip to blackmail—threatening exposure unless money is paid.
In July 2025, a 16-year-old from Lucknow died by suicide after he was coerced into sharing personal videos, which were then used to extort money. The threats were sent to his classmates and relatives via fake profiles. His family had no idea he was being blackmailed. Cybercrime units across Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, and Indore have seen a sharp spike in male victim reports, with boys aged 13 to 19 being primary targets.
These scams are not spontaneous or amateur. They’re run like operations: fake Instagram or gaming profiles, AI-generated photos of girls, scripted flirty conversations, and even deepfake voice calls. Once they gain the boy’s trust, they escalate the chat, record screen activity, and use that material as leverage.
One scam ring in Hyderabad created fake “gamer girl” accounts on Discord, luring boys with promises of private gaming sessions or video calls. Within 15 minutes of chat, several boys were tricked into exposing themselves. Over ₹1.8 lakh was extorted from just 14 victims—most paid silently to avoid shame.
Parents often overlook boys as potential targets, assuming they are immune to such threats. This mindset has made boys especially vulnerable. Many are too afraid or embarrassed to tell anyone, leading to dangerous silence, self-blame, and in some cases, irreversible outcomes.
Here’s what must be done:
- Educate boys about grooming and sextortion—clearly and without shame.
- Monitor chats on gaming platforms, Discord, and Instagram DMs.
- Tell them tonever engage in explicit chats or send images—even to someone who “seems nice.”
- If targeted, donot pay—report immediately to gov.in. Save every chat and message.
This is not a mistake by children. It’s a calculated crime by adults. Silence empowers predators. Awareness breaks that cycle.
