AI scams have invaded Shaadi portals!
Indian matrimonial sites are being infiltrated by AI-powered scam networks posing as ideal life partners. These fake profiles are crafted with stolen images, chatbot-driven responses, and even voice interaction—designed to emotionally manipulate users into trust, and eventually extort money or private data. Victims include NRIs, single professionals, divorcees, and vulnerable families looking for genuine matches.
In 2024, a Noida-based tech executive was targeted by a woman claiming to be a Canada-based doctor. The profile was verified on a matrimonial app. Over two months of emotionally engaging chats, she convinced him to share his passport details and ₹3.2 lakh for a “visa file and travel expenses.” She vanished soon after. Police traced the operation to a fake syndicate using AI tools to run dozens of parallel scams.
These scammers use large language models to simulate intelligent, culturally aligned conversations. They can discuss festivals, family values, education, even food preferences—crafted to match the user’s background. Some bots now include voice cloning, enabling audio calls that sound convincingly human. This level of realism bypasses traditional scam filters and even family vetting.
They don’t rush. The goal is to build emotional intimacy. Victims are often engaged for weeks before any financial demand is made. Requests range from “emergency medical help,” “travel funds,” or “token gifts for meeting rituals.” In some cases, explicit photos are solicited under the pretext of trust, later used for blackmail.
In Bengaluru, a widower was manipulated into sharing private videos after months of courtship with what turned out to be a deepfake profile. His children were later contacted for ransom. Matrimonial scams like these are rising sharply in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, where trust in digital matchmaking remains high but digital literacy is uneven.
Many sites do not have AI detection filters or mandatory KYC. This loophole is exploited to mass-create fake identities using AI-generated faces and scripts. Once reported, these profiles vanish and resurface under new names. Victims are left with emotional trauma, reputational risk, and financial loss—while platforms claim zero responsibility.
Families must stop treating online matrimonial profiles as safe or culturally vetted. Every interaction should be verified independently. Reverse search photos, demand video calls with live interaction, and never send money or personal documents during early stages.
