Telegram “study groups” look harmless.

Teens join to exchange notes, share assignments, clear doubts and feel supported before exams. Behind this innocent façade, predators enter these groups using anonymous profiles. They pose as toppers, tutors or helpful seniors. Once trust is built, they move vulnerable teens into private chats and begin targeted manipulation that escalates into sextortion.

How These Traps Start:

Teens forward PDFs, photos of homework and project files in open groups.

Strangers inside the group message them privately pretending to offer additional help.

These strangers speak politely, share motivational quotes and act like mentors.

They slowly push for more personal interactions and build emotional dependence.

Nothing looks dangerous in the beginning, and that is exactly how grooming works.

How Predators Manipulate Teens:

They ask for personal photos “to recognise you during group discussions”.

They request a quick selfie “for your student profile”.

They offer to help with stress or emotional problems and shift to private conversations.

They convince teens to share photos or videos under the guise of trust.

The moment any personal content is shared, the tone changes.

What began as study help becomes blackmail.

How Sextortion Happens:

Criminals threaten to leak photos to school groups and parents.

They demand more images or videos.

They demand money through UPI or gift cards.

They create panic by sending screenshots of the teen’s contact list.

Because teens feel guilty or ashamed, they hesitate to seek help, which worsens the situation.

Real World Evidence:

Indian cyber police units report a surge in sextortion cases starting from Telegram and anonymous study groups.
Source:https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/delhi-news/delhi-sees-rise-in-sextortion-cases-cops-warn-students-101696581877023.html

National Crime Records Bureau notes that minors face increasing online exploitation through platforms with encrypted or anonymous features.
Source:https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/ncrb-report-shows-rise-in-cybercrimes-against-children/article67466518.ece

Multiple advisories warn that predators join academic groups to identify isolated or stressed teens.
Source:https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/cybercrime-warning-telegram-study-groups-student-targeting-8301246

Why Teens Fall For It:

The environment feels academic and trustworthy.

Predators act patient, supportive and intelligent.

Teens assume everyone in a study group is a student.

Academic pressure makes help feel comforting.

They do not recognise grooming patterns until it is too late.

What Parents Must Know:

Telegram groups can have thousands of unknown members.

Anonymous accounts make identification impossible.

File sharing creates permanent digital footprints.

Predators monitor which teens are active, stressed or isolated.

Teens rarely tell parents until the blackmail becomes unbearable.

How To Protect Teens:

Prohibit joining public Telegram or WhatsApp study groups.

Encourage school verified or teacher moderated groups only.

Teach children to never move conversations to private chats with strangers.

Explain that no one needs a selfie or personal photo for academic help.

Regularly discuss grooming, manipulation and blackmail patterns.

Build trust so teens report problems immediately without fear.

If blackmail occurs, parents must preserve evidence and approach cyber police without delay.

Why It Matters:
Teens seek support online because academics are stressful. Criminals exploit this vulnerability with calculated precision. A single shared photo becomes permanent leverage for extortion. Protecting teens requires understanding how these traps start, how manipulation works and how quickly a supportive chat can turn into exploitation.

They are the new hunting grounds for predators. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar recently revealed that his 13-year-old daughter was approached by a stranger on a gaming platform who asked her to send nude photos (Times of India). This real case underlines the danger: predators are hiding inside games children play every day.

How Predators Operate in Games:

Friendly Entry:They begin with harmless chat—compliments, casual gaming talk.

Testing Boundaries:They ask personal questions: “Are you a girl?”, “Where do you live?”, “Are you alone?”

Escalation:They move from game chat to private requests, asking for images or videos.

Pressure & Secrecy:Children are told to keep it “a secret” or risk losing a friendship.

Blackmail:Once any content is shared, it is used to threaten, shame, or extort.

Roblox: A Special Case
Roblox is not just a game—it is a vast social platform with unique risks. It has whisper chat and private communication features that allow strangers to move conversations away from public view into hidden chats, bypassing moderation. (cybersafetyconsulting.com)

In one case, a 9-year-old child was groomed inside Roblox chat and then pressured to continue on Discord, where explicit demands followed (ABC News). Researchers have also called out “deeply disturbing” risks in Roblox chatrooms that remain inadequately monitored (The Guardian).

This makes Roblox a prime target for predators who exploit its popularity with children, while parents assume it is “just another game.”

Warning Signs Parents Must Watch:

Children using headphones and hiding chats.

Switching screens quickly when approached.

Mood swings or withdrawal after gaming.

Requests for in-game gifts or money from “friends.”

Invitations to join private chats or move to external apps.

What Parents Must Do:

Disable stranger chatfeatures wherever possible.

Explain grooming tacticsclearly so children know the red flags.

Set gaming rules:only in shared spaces, with time limits.

Monitor account activity:friend lists, chats, in-game invites.

Report predators immediatelyon cybercrime.gov.in and to the gaming platform.

Save screenshots, IDs, and chat logsas evidence for authorities.

Why This Matters:
Predators no longer need to stalk physical spaces—they sit inside the games your children are playing. Awareness and parental vigilance are the only shields against this silent threat.

But hidden among the glamour are predators posing as influencers, mentors, or friends—grooming girls for exploitation. This manipulation hides in plain sight.

How Grooming Works:

Fake profiles of “aspiring influencers” lure girls with validation.

Predators flatter and befriend, then escalate to private requests.

Victims are pressured to keep chats secret.

Images and details are later misused for extortion or trafficking.

Why Teenage Girls Are Targets:

Social validation and follower counts drive risky behaviour.

Predators exploit peer comparison and influencer worship.

Emotional dependence is created before exploitation.

Real-World Evidence:

A BBC investigation revealed how predators useInstagram influencer culture to lure teenage girls into exploitation, posing as talent scouts or content creators (BBC Report).

NCRB data shows a rise inonline sexual exploitation of children in India, with grooming cases sharply increasing over the last five years (NCRB 2023 Report).

How to Stay Safe:

Parents must talk openly about online grooming and red flags.

Teenagers should never share private content with online-only contacts.

Suspicious profiles should be reported to platforms and cybercrime cells.

Why It Matters:
Influencer-driven grooming is real and growing. Awareness is the first step to shutting down this hidden crime.

AI girlfriend apps are exploding in popularity across India, especially among teenagers and young adults. These apps offer users a digital “partner” who texts, talks, flirts, and even sends explicit messages—all powered by artificial intelligence. While marketed as entertainment or emotional support, the reality is far more disturbing. These apps exploit psychological vulnerabilities, harvest sensitive user data, and in some cases, serve as a gateway to grooming and extortion.

In 2023, an Indian teenager from Pune spent over ₹90,000 on in-app purchases for an AI girlfriend app. What started as casual interaction turned into emotional dependency. When the app suddenly restricted access behind a paywall, he spiralled into depression. Similar cases have been reported in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru—users treating these bots like real emotional partners, unable to detach from the illusion.

These apps are designed with reinforcement loops to build artificial intimacy. They study your chat patterns, tone, and emotional triggers using machine learning. The more you engage, the more personalised and seductive the bot becomes. Some offer NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content for a fee, pushing users—especially minors—into sexually explicit exchanges. This is not AI romance. It’s monetised emotional manipulation.

There is a dangerous psychology at play: loneliness, low self-esteem, and desire for validation. These apps prey on exactly that. Once emotional dependency is formed, users are nudged to spend money for deeper “connection”—premium messages, voice notes, or even explicit photos. What’s worse, some third-party clones of these apps have been caught storing private conversations and media on unsecured servers, which were later leaked on Telegram channels.

In several instances, cybercriminals have mimicked these interfaces to trap users. In Mumbai, a case was reported where a user thought he was chatting with an AI companion, but was unknowingly interacting with a scammer using the same app UI. Personal messages and screen recordings were later used to blackmail him. These platforms are also used as grooming tools by predators who target vulnerable individuals through chat apps posing as “AI girlfriends.”

One of the most widely reported apps in this category is “Replika.”

It has been flagged globally for:

Simulating intimate and sexual conversations with users.

Creating emotional dependency, especially among minors.

Storing sensitive user interactions.

Reportedly sending sexually explicit content even without proper age verification.

Italy banned Replika in 2023, citing serious concerns around emotional manipulation and data privacy risks, particularly involving minors. The Italian data protection authority stated that the app posed a “real risk to emotionally vulnerable individuals” and failed to comply with GDPR safeguards.

This case sets a strong precedent for India to consider regulating such apps immediately.

India currently lacks specific legal oversight for such emotional exploitation. These apps operate in a grey zone—not classified as adult content, not regulated as mental health tools. This legal blind spot makes it easy for foreign and domestic developers to run operations with minimal accountability, even when underage users are involved.

Every parent, educator, and young user must understand: these apps are not just fantasy games. They are sophisticated psychological traps designed to exploit your emotions and finances. Do not share personal details, explicit content, or payment information with such platforms. Dependency on a bot is not companionship—it is digital conditioning.
