We recently did couple part video with ADG Vishwas Nangre Patil Sir, Anti-Corruption Bureau, Maharashtra Police. If you have not watched this already, please watch it right now, we have got so many messages, calls, emails saying that this video saved them from getting caught in a trap!

This video shows the entire MO (modus operandi)- the way scammers operate during a digital detention fake call. We hope that this will help you stay alert and not fall for these scams.

TIPS TO STAY SAFE FROM “DIGITAL DETENTION”

Treat every unknown number with a generous amount of skepticism
Do not answer a video call on WhatsApp from any unknown number. Not just digital interrogation, it can make you vulnerable to many other cybercrimes like extortion, blackmail
If you receive an IVR call from an alleged CBI/ ED/ Cybercrime cell, immediately hang up & report that number. High chances of it being a fraud
Police knows how to find you & serve you a notice when required
Anyone who begins to tell you details of your bank account details, share portfolio numbers is a huge red flag! Nobody outside of you & your bank should know these. Disconnect the call
If there is a call saying your parcel is lying at FedEx office with drugs, definitely disconnect and report to your local police station immediately. In several of these cases you as well as the concerned police officer could be a victim of identity theft which needs to be reported
You can fearlessly approach the cyber cell of your city or the closest police station to authenticate identity of the said officer who was attempting to digitally interrogate you
Children and elderly need special training not to panic at such calls under any circumstances. Any fear inducing calls must be immediately double checked
You can create safe words within family. When faced with such distress, it will help in verification by asking the fraudster to confirm the safe word
Under any circumstances, do not proceed to transfer your money to a neutral/ RBI account
Immediately instruct your bank that any suspicious activity must be curtailed
LIE! – Use every means possible to get out of the situation. If at all you happen to get forcefully engaged in the conversation, simply say that you know the said officer personally or even higher up and you will find out the details.
AI & deepfake have made it terribly simple to sound or look like another person. Even if the person on video looks like an officer you have seen in news media, don’t be scared. Hold your ground, refuse to entertain them.
Dial 1930 immediately. Reporting financial crimes within 48 hours of the incident hugely increase chances of securing your money & freezing the transfer of money to criminal’s account.

REJECT THAT GIFT! #AAH

We love gifts, we love being celebrated. I was away on my birthday this year, when I got back there were so many gifts waiting for me and it instantly made me feel so happy, celebrated, loved. I quickly opened each one and carefully checked the senders for all. Checked out, every single one from people I knew. Cos if there was any from someone I didn’t recognize, I would immediately report & trash it.

Lets understand why. Many reasons but lets explore top few.

There’s a new scam where criminals are sending these gifts anonymously, sometimes even packaged in reputed online store packaging. There is a whole video on my channel explaining how our data is being leaked by various sources whether our watchmen, online store employees, warehouse workers and others.

These criminals zero in on most vulnerable victims and send these gifts. When you receive them, you are happy & curious to know the sender. There will be a QR code inside the box & a message asking you to scan that code to reveal your mystery admirer.

If you fall for this trap and scan the code or that code takes you to another link which you click, it could very well be tata, okay, bye bye to your information, bank accounts, loss of reputation, social profiles…everything awful you can think of.

It could also be physically dangerous to accept unexpected gifts. Someone could send you life threatening stuff that might explode, poison, we just don’t know.

Additionally, if the delivery person behaves annoyed and says that if you don’t accept the gift, he will generate an OTP that will be sent to you which is needed by him. Under any circumstances, do not do so. Again, same threats. Clearly refuse and tell him he can do as he likes, close the door immediately. You can speak to customer service of the online site if package displays one and share your concern.

Remember that not every gift is good news.

FAKE UPI SCAMS! #AAH

Another day, another scam- fake UPI apps to trick people. People are losing money, stressed out, wondering how they fell for such trickery.

How does this scam work? Simple. If you run a small business or even if someone owes you money, they say alright give me your QR Code and I am transferring the amount right away. Their body language, their behaviour, attire, everything looks normal, nothing to suspect.

They scan your UPI QR code, quickly enter some PIN, there is also that flash notification on their screen, they show you the success screen, you hear the success notification sound. You look at their screen and it does infact look like the authentic app.

Now, here is the catch, you don’t get the payment though. Then the scammer pretends that they are getting late. They tell you that they are getting late, will even offer their phone number that if

you don’t receive the money, you can call them. Network issues will get blamed or service issues.

Quite often, people are okay with this explanation and let the scammer go. And you also say bye bye to your money cos its never ever coming to you!

There are 100s of Telegram channels where such fake UPI Apps- GPay, Paytm, Phone Pe, you name it- their CLONES are available for few 100 Rs. You install these on your phone and game on! You can scam multiple people in a day!

Staying safe from this scam is fairly easy though. Do not allow anyone to leave unless you see the money transferred in your bank, wallet, hear it on soundbox. Zero exceptions.

Trust is good, surety Is better.

Yes, teach your children to lie! For their own safety.

If anyone unknown asks your children online if their parents are home- answer should always be a RESOUNDING YES!! Infact my mom is always in the same room. Yes my parents have my passwords- responses should be standard. Nobody can know child is home alone.

If they are waiting for you to pick up outside a coaching class, sports center- ideally ask them to wait inside a building and come outside only when you arrive. If they are going into a building for a class/ tuition teach them to just say- oh my mom is waiting upstairs or my uncle lives here he’s waiting at the lift upstairs.

If kids are playing at a park and a stranger approach to ask if they are alone, teach them to say- no my parents are right here, even wave to someone else randomly and say they are my parents. If they feel uncomfortable shout loud that they are not my dad, not my mom!! If someone tries to befriend them at a mall, same loud behavior.

Also teach them to be wary of adults asking children for help. Adults should ideally not be asking a small child for help- can you help me to my car, can you take this to my doorstep please. Response- No, my mom is right there waiting and RUN!

It’s okay to speak lies and bringing back to my mantra for child safety- TEACH THEM CRITICAL THINKING. NOT EVERY ELDER IS A GOD AND NOT EVERYONE CAN BE TRUSTED JUST COS THEY ARE OLDER IN AGE.

What is virtual autism- Virtual autism is a condition that arises when young children below the age of two are excessively exposed to screens, resulting in ASD-like symptoms such as communication problems and behavior oddities. (https://prayatna.co.in/virtual-autism-how-to-deal-with-it/)

“Most of the time, the child receives only certain sensations (visual and / or auditory) from a virtual environment, and can not correlate these visual and auditory sensations with other types of sensations: vestibular, tactile, odor, tasteless, unable to develop accordingly. In such a child, if they do not intervene early (before 2-3 years), these problems will become more and more acute…”- Cristiana BĂLAN, at “Spiru Haret” University, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences Braşov, Romania

This can lead to speech delay. Cognitive abilities can be affected as well, possibly leading to mental disorders. Excessive screen time can disrupt the natural developmental processes of young children, affecting their social interactions, language development, and cognitive abilities [1]. Increased screen time in young children has been associated with negative health outcomes, including decreased cognitive ability, impaired language development, mood issues, and autistic-like behavior such as hyperactivity, short attention span, and irritability

It was found that even the light-dark rhythms that help the brain produce melatonin, dopamine, and increase a child’s understanding of their relationship to themselves and others can be messed up with too much screen exposure.

These phenomena can cause children to experience screen withdrawal when they are separated from the world they have immersed themselves in for so long. They can lose their ability to sleep properly, interact with others, and can become depressed and even angry. The aggression that can accompany this can further damage their relationships, and leave them with low self esteem.

Virtual autism can also result in hyperactivity-like behaviours in affected children. Increased screen time has been associated with short attention spans and hyperactivity. Some common hyperactivity challenges experienced by children with virtual autism include:

Restlessness and difficulty sitting still.
Impulsivity and acting without considering consequences.
Difficulty following instructions and rules.
Rapidly shifting attention between tasks.
Impaired attention span and focus.
Delayed speech and language development.
Difficulties in understanding and processing information.
Challenges with problem-solving and critical thinking.
Frequent tantrums and meltdowns.
Increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli.
Agitation and frustration in response to changes or transitions.
Difficulty regulating emotions and expressing needs.

They are not situationally aware, absent minded, might have frequent injuries, falls, not paying attention to what they are doing/ walking- very dangerous

“To limit the time spent by the child in front of the TV, tablet, computer, mobile phone, parents should adhere to certain rules:

Make a daily schedule to follow with the child.
Establish rules for the use of the TV, the computer, and the phone by the child
Remove any gadget from the child’s visual contact
Offering rewards when the child respects the daily schedule
Building a special place in the house with exciting things that can be used when the child gets bored and wishes to play on the tablet. So the focus will be on something new
The TV and the computer will be closed while homework is being done
TV shows, computer games will be chosen with discernment Physical activities, walking will be of great significance

Physical activities have a major impact on the emotional development of the child. Emotional health is very important for the development of the child and can be greatly stimulated by movement. With the help of sport, the child grows physically, mentally and emotionally fulfilled. Sport stimulates interactions. With the help of it, children will learn to be patient with others, to wait for their turn, to be responsible, to respect others, to be accountable, to cope with unexpected situations, to adapt more easily. And last but not least, they will make friends of the same age with them and with similar passions.”

Getting kids’ out in the world is a good step in the right direction. Social interaction with peers, moving their bodies, playing and exploring the world in a hands-on way can boost brain development and mood. This can prevent virtual autism symptoms, as well as reduce them.

We learned above that the children who had the most effects from too much screen exposure were the ones who lacked parent-child interaction.

We must look for ways to increase our child’s movement and interaction. The more activities we do that combine movement, social skills, and sensory input the better.

Here are some suggestions of things we can do with our children:

Yoga
Puzzles
Fishing
Board games
Building blocks
Hiking
Cooking
Drawing or colouring
Visiting an aquarium or zoo
Going to the beach

Spend time with children, be observant. Any exhibit of isolation, increased irritability, inability to express should be addressed immediately.

DANGER AT THE DOOR! #AAH

There have been several reports of people complaining that a delivery person from an online portal showed up at their door and we have already spoken about in a previous video in detail that you can be scammed into given away an OTP or clicking on a phishing link by the person.

However today let’s talk about how it can be physically dangerous for you if you even open the door to entertain such a scamster. I read this story of a lady on Twitter where she had booked an appointment for some blood tests from a reputed lab and someone reached her doorstep 4 hours earlier to the designated slot and due to suspicion, she smartly refused to let the person in the house.

Now, most online shopping portals send us a text/ whatsapp when our parcel is arriving, several items also need an OTP that is generated closer to time of arrival. Always track if you are expecting a delivery before you open the door for a delivery person.

If you have a CCTV/ door camera great, you can always look through that screen and accept or refuse a delivery should you feel uncomfortable with the person’s body language. If they insist on having your signature, you could ask them to wait at the watchman’s desk in the building and offer to sign it there or in worse case, just refuse the parcel in any case.

So how does someone know if at all you have ordered something online- I have given a detailed explanation on how that happens please take a look. How did someone know if someone has requested a blood test? This is a very serious issue and don’t let it go if it ever happens with you. Either there is a hack in the system of that lab from where patient data is being leaked or someone from their office is leaking that data!

This is far more dangerous than what its sounding to you even now.

Your entire medical history, any vulnerability, sick family members, address, phone number everything is now out for misuse. Same is the case with fake delivery persons. The kind of items you frequently order are good indicators of your family members, age groups, income, of course your address and phone number are already online!

Our safety is our responsibility first.

PUNE POLICE CYBERCRIME INVESTIGATION TRAINING FEEDBACK #ASF

Glad to share feedback of cybercrime investigation training conducted by ‘Akancha Srivastava Foundation’ for Pune Police on January 30th, 2024 at Cop Excellence Center of Pune City Police Commissioner Office. This training session was supported by SBI Foundation.

We trained the Pune City Police on cybercrime investigation on January 30th, 2024. Over 130 officials attended the expert investigation training including the Additional Commissioner of Police, DCP Cyber Cell, and several senior investigation officers.

Some of the participating officers have solved tricky cases of Bitcoin/ cryptocurrency in India. In an independent feedback process, and as you will see in the video too, these sharp officers praised our techniques and tools. That is definitely a huge validation for our content design. We make huge efforts before every training session to study that particular region, specific pain points, engage senior police officials in the process, review the content with concerned officer, train our investigators on specific need, rehearse the program flow before each session.

Hope to continue such police- public partnership as we have been doing for last 7 years.

HARYANA GIRL POWER! #ASF

‘Akancha Srivastava Foundation’ partnered with Haryana Police to spread awareness about #Dial112- Emergency Response Number And cyber safety.

We were invited by Bhiwani Police, Haryana to spread awareness about their powerful safety initiatives on ground especially for girls & children safety. Together we conducted back to back cyber safety awareness workshops as young adults/ children or even adults are addicted to internet today.

Delighted to share how wonderfully the girl students accepted the workshops, their takeaway & most importantly their courage! It is heart warming to listen that we were able to inspire them to stand up for themselves & speak up for themselves. These kids are all set to spread their wings and fly into the world towards their careers, new cities, new paths. We are thankful to have played a small role in handholding them in this journey. This is the kind of confidence we wish to keep fuelling in youth so that they can take a stand for themselves and for others. We are thankful to the students who trusted us with their personal stories, we are in touch with them to help in any way possible.

Having Bhiwani Police women police officers along with us has further raised the respect in our hearts for law enforcement. We got insights into how hard they work in the region, listen to victims with compassion & with a stern hand when dealing with a criminal. Grateful to such committed, dedicated police personnel who are in service of the nation 24×7.

Let us tell you some more about #Dial112 emergency response number -a fantastic set up especially for girls who can download this app and fill their basic information which allows police to track their location.

All e rickshaws in Bhiwani have been given a unique ID and their driver’s details registered with the Police. In case of any such situation where a girl is feeling unsafe during travel, she simply has to Dial 112 and trigger emergency response. Patrol cars reach the victim within minutes with this ‘trip management service’. They even double check to ensure that the caller has reached their destination safely. Additionally Bhiwani Police has deployed women Police personnel in plain clothes at ‘hot spots’ & ‘hot routes’.

These spots cover entrances of schools & colleges, shopping malls, bus stations, train stations, public parks, food courts, popular travel routes. These personnel immediately intervene at any sign of harassment.

Our Foundation was glad to be invited to be a part of this initiative where we educated thousands of young students across school & colleges about cyber safety and Bhiwani Police measures. Enriching experience for us to witness this change within interiors of the country. We hope to continue this police public, knowledge partnership for long term social change as we have been doing for last many years.
