Today, wars are not just fought on borders—they are fought on screens. From misinformation to psychological manipulation, digital warfare is a reality. In this landscape, how we behave online directly impacts national security. Discipline in the digital space is no longer a choice—it is a duty.

Every post, share, and comment has consequences. Unverified content, emotional outbursts, or panic-driven messages can create unrest. In times of crisis, this chaos serves enemy interests. The aim of digital attacks is not always to harm physically—but to confuse, divide, and destabilize.

This is not about silence. It’s about responsibility. Every citizen is now a participant in the information war.
Before reacting, ask: Is this true? Who gains if I share this? Could it spread fear or falsehood?

A Time To Unite, A Time To Speak Up!

On this Mother’s Day, as we honor the selfless love, care, and sacrifices of mothers who shape and guide our lives, it is a timely reminder of our bond with our Mother Nation. Just as a mother tirelessly protects, nurtures, and sacrifices for her children, it is our duty to stand with and protect the soul of our country. Today, as we celebrate those who have given us life and meaning, let us reflect on how we, as citizens and leaders, can contribute to the well-being and strength of India—by speaking up, standing together, and acting with purpose when it matters the most.

In the midst of the ongoing crisis, I find myself deeply disheartened by the silence of so many startup founders and leaders within the entrepreneurial community (there are exceptions). It is particularly troubling when those with the power to influence and inspire are choosing to remain silent during such a crucial moment for our nation. This is not a time for indifference. This is a time for leadership, for empathy, and, most importantly, for action.

The absence of voices from those who can make a difference is a failure to live up to the responsibility that comes with leadership. Silence in times of crisis is not neutral; it is complicity. In this moment, more than ever, it is imperative that we rise above the confines of our businesses and professional pursuits and speak out for what is right. It is time to put aside our individual interests and remember that we are, first and foremost, Indians.

As a country, we have always stood together through adversity. The strength of India lies in our unity, and it is this unity that we must preserve. It is time for startup founders and business leaders to demonstrate the same commitment to the nation that they show to their organizations. Leadership is not confined to the boardroom—it extends to the very fabric of society. It is about standing with your people when it counts the most, supporting the cause of justice and peace, and doing what is right even when it’s difficult.

We cannot afford to remain passive. As leaders, we have the power to influence, to mobilize, and to guide. Our actions—or our inaction—speak volumes. Now is the time to stand up, not just as business leaders but as citizens of India. We must lead with empathy, courage, and a shared commitment to the greater good. This is not just a time to show solidarity—it’s a time to take action.

Let us not look back and wonder where the leaders were when our country needed them most. Let’s ensure that when this moment passes, it will be remembered as the time we stood together—united as one, as Indians first.
Now is the time to speak up, to act, and to lead.- Jai Hind, Jai Bharat 🇮🇳

A SIM swap scam is a type of fraud in which cybercriminals take control of your mobile phone number. This scam is typically carried out through social engineering, where the fraudster deceives your telecom service provider into transferring your phone number to a new SIM card that they control. Once they have control of your phone number, they can use it to access sensitive accounts, intercept messages, and steal your personal information. This type of scam is particularly dangerous because it targets the two-factor authentication (2FA) that many services rely on for extra security.

How SIM Swap Scams Work:

Gathering Information:

Phishing and social engineering: The scammers typically begin by gathering as much personal information about you as possible. This can be done through social media, phishing emails, data breaches, or even purchasing information from the dark web. The more they know about you, the more convincing they can be when contacting your telecom provider.

Impersonating You:

The scammer will contact your mobile service provider, pretending to be you. They may use the personal information they’ve gathered to convince customer service agents that they are you. This can include knowing your full name, date of birth, address, or even the answers to security questions that the telecom provider uses for account verification.

Requesting a SIM Swap:

Once the scammer has convinced the provider that they are you, they will request to transfer your phone number to a new SIM card. This request is often made by phone or email. They might say they’ve lost their phone, damaged their SIM, or simply need a new one.

Gaining Access to Your Phone:

After the SIM swap is approved, your phone will lose service, and the scammer’s phone will begin receiving your calls and messages, including any One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or 2FA codes that are sent to your number. These OTPs are used by services such as email accounts, online banking, and social media to confirm your identity when logging in.

Stealing Your Information or Money:

With control over your phone number, the scammer can now easily reset passwords on various accounts that are linked to your phone number. Since many accounts rely on SMS-based 2FA to verify identity, the hacker can gain access to your email, bank account, social media profiles, and even crypto wallets.

The scammer may transfer funds, change account settings, or access sensitive personal information.

Covering Their Tracks:

Once they’ve gained access to your accounts, the scammer may take steps to cover their tracks, such as changing your account recovery details, locking you out of your accounts, or making it difficult for you to reverse the fraud.

Common Targets of SIM Swap Scams:

Online banking and financial services: These are prime targets because they are often linked to 2FA via SMS, which is easy for scammers to intercept.

Cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges: Since cryptocurrencies rely heavily on secure access to wallets, fraudsters are keen to target crypto investors through SIM swapping.

Social media accounts: Once scammers gain control of your social media accounts, they may steal your identity, spread malware, or use your profiles for other malicious activities.

Email accounts: Access to email accounts can be used to reset passwords for other online services, providing the scammer access to even more personal information.

How to Protect Yourself from SIM Swap Scams:

Use Strong Authentication Methods:

Avoid SMS-based 2FA: While SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA) is better than just using a password, it’s not foolproof. Switch to more secure forms of 2FA such as authenticator apps (like Google Authenticator or Authy) or hardware keys (like YubiKey).

Set Up a PIN or Password with Your Telecom Provider:

Contact your mobile carrier and set up a PIN or password on your account that is required for any changes to your account, such as a SIM swap. This additional layer of security makes it harder for fraudsters to impersonate you and complete the SIM swap.

Monitor Your Accounts Closely:

Regularly monitor your bank accounts, credit card statements, and social media accounts for any unusual or unauthorized activity. If you notice anything suspicious, take immediate action.

Be Cautious with Personal Information:

Be mindful of what personal information you share online. Avoid oversharing on social media, as this can be used to gain access to your accounts.

Alert Your Mobile Carrier About Suspicious Activity:

If you suspect you’re the target of a SIM swap scam, contact your mobile service provider immediately and ask them to put additional security measures on your account. Some carriers offer SIM lock features, which prevent unauthorized changes to your account.

Set Up Account Alerts:

Many financial institutions and online services allow you to set up account alerts for changes to your account, such as password resets, login attempts, or other significant activity. This can help you catch fraud early.

Use Encrypted Communication:

Use encrypted messaging services like Signal or WhatsApp that do not rely on phone numbers for authentication and are less vulnerable to SIM swapping.

Signs You Might Be a Victim of a SIM Swap:

Loss of service on your phone: If your phone suddenly loses signal or shows “No Service,” it could indicate that your number has been swapped.

Unexpected password reset notifications: If you suddenly receive notifications for password changes or account access requests, it could be a sign that the scammer is gaining control of your accounts.

Receiving unusual activity alerts from your bank: If you get alerts from your bank about transactions you didn’t initiate or security alerts you didn’t expect, it’s a strong indicator of fraud.

Conclusion:

SIM swap scams are a growing threat, and while they can be difficult to prevent, taking proactive steps to secure your accounts can significantly reduce your risk. By implementing stronger authentication methods, being cautious with your personal data, and regularly monitoring your accounts, you can protect yourself from falling victim to this type of cybercrime.

ADG Krishna Prakash Sir (Maharashtra Police) applauded the landmark Supreme Court judgment of September 23, 2024 which now makes viewing, storing child sexual exploitative and abuse material an offence under POCSO, IT Act.

A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud said the sexual act was only the beginning of a child’s victimization.

“It continues through its recording, and perpetuates as photographs and videos that float through cyberspace, freely accessible to anyone who has the ability to surf the Internet… The knowledge that their abuse is being watched by countless strangers, sometimes years after the actual event, exacerbates the psychological wounds on top of the trauma that was already induced by the act in the first place. This perpetuating violation deprives the victim of any remaining hope or chance to heal, recover from the abuse and find closure,” Justice J.B. Pardiwala, who authored the 200-page judgment termed as ground-breaking by the Chief Justice, observed.

The Supreme Court urged the Parliament to “seriously consider” amending the POCSO Act to substitute the term “child pornography” with “Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material” or CSEAM.

Source- https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/storing-and-viewing-child-sexually-exploitative-abuse-material-an-offence-under-pocso-supreme-court/article68672855.ece

Justice Pardiwala thanked the Chief Justice for the opportunity to pen this judgment. The order focused on Section 15 of the POCSO Act which lays down punishment for the storage of pornographic material involving children. “Any person who stores any pornographic material involving a child and fails to report or destroy it is punishable with a fine of not less than five thousand rupees., and repeat offence will be punishable with fine of not less than ten thousand rupees. If the material is stored for further transmitting or propagating, then along with fine, it is punishable with up to three years of imprisonment. For storing child pornographic material for commercial purpose is punishable with three to five years of imprisonment, and in subsequent conviction, up to seven years of imprisonment,” the Section says.

ADG Krishna Prakash Sir shares his concern on rehabilitating the child victims in a proper manner involving long term counselling, mental health support, reintegrating into society in appropriate measures. He states that children are our future, our country’s treasure, its our collective responsibility to protect them, nurture them, educate them, handhold them. Future of humanity depends on how we behave towards children today.

ADG Krishna Prakash Sir asks the hard question about how is it that human beings can ever treat children so inhumanly? What about our ethical, moral, base human values? How does it allow us to perform such violent acts? Its not just legally but very humanly impossible to imagine and perpetrators must be most severely punished.

Do watch this very compelling video & do the right thing by rejecting any such content, reporting it and protecting any child you see in need of it.

‘Akancha Srivastava Foundation’ partnered with Haryana Police to spread awareness about #Dial112- Emergency Response Number And cyber safety.

We were invited by Bhiwani Police, Haryana to spread awareness about their powerful safety initiatives on ground especially for girls & children safety. Together we conducted back to back cyber safety awareness workshops as young adults/ children or even adults are addicted to internet today.

Delighted to share how wonderfully the girl students accepted the workshops, their takeaway & most importantly their courage! It is heart warming to listen that we were able to inspire them to stand up for themselves & speak up for themselves. These kids are all set to spread their wings and fly into the world towards their careers, new cities, new paths. We are thankful to have played a small role in handholding them in this journey. This is the kind of confidence we wish to keep fuelling in youth so that they can take a stand for themselves and for others. We are thankful to the students who trusted us with their personal stories, we are in touch with them to help in any way possible.

Having Bhiwani Police women police officers along with us has further raised the respect in our hearts for law enforcement. We got insights into how hard they work in the region, listen to victims with compassion & with a stern hand when dealing with a criminal. Grateful to such committed, dedicated police personnel who are in service of the nation 24×7.

Let us tell you some more about #Dial112 emergency response number -a fantastic set up especially for girls who can download this app and fill their basic information which allows police to track their location.

All e rickshaws in Bhiwani have been given a unique ID and their driver’s details registered with the Police. In case of any such situation where a girl is feeling unsafe during travel, she simply has to Dial 112 and trigger emergency response. Patrol cars reach the victim within minutes with this ‘trip management service’. They even double check to ensure that the caller has reached their destination safely. Additionally Bhiwani Police has deployed women Police personnel in plain clothes at ‘hot spots’ & ‘hot routes’.

These spots cover entrances of schools & colleges, shopping malls, bus stations, train stations, public parks, food courts, popular travel routes. These personnel immediately intervene at any sign of harassment.

Our Foundation was glad to be invited to be a part of this initiative where we educated thousands of young students across school & colleges about cyber safety and Bhiwani Police measures. Enriching experience for us to witness this change within interiors of the country. We hope to continue this police public, knowledge partnership for long term social change as we have been doing for last many years.

Heartfelt thanks to Bhiwani Police, Haryana Police for giving us this opportunity.

In our Republic week special podcast ADG Navniet Sekera Sir (Uttar Pradesh) says- every small action & inaction matters!

Additional Director General of Police (Uttar Pradesh)- Navniet Sekera Sir believes that we have to stop asking how much difference will our actions make, just go ahead and do what is right.

ADG Navniet Sekera Sir narrates his favorite story where a little boy talks about making a difference to one life at a time. Similarly, we need to focus on whatever little change we can make, even if its not very large. If each one can change a single life, it will make the world a better place. Be the change, says Sir.

IG Navniet Sekera Sir’s Bio: With 27 meritorious years in the Indian Police Force, he is an alumnus of IIT Roorkee, went to do MBA from Indian School of Business, Hyderabad & has always been in news for his innovative application of technology for various aspects of policing.

Phishing Attacks: Important Safety Tips To Protect Yourself #AAH

These days phishing attacks are becoming very common however, one can protect themselves from these attacks by implementing some safety tips. Phishing is a cybercrime where a person posing as a trusted identity might steal personal information like banking details, credit card details, and password. They might do this to steal your information and get financial benefits out of it. It can also happen over a call and is called Vishing (a portmanteau of voice and phishing).

Internet is a beautiful place to be at even though it exposes us to a world full of scammers and fraudulent activities. If you are not careful enough, you might end up losing your sensitive details as well as hard-earned money. We all have heard of cases where a person in naivety gives away their OTP or passwords to scammers and lose money. To save ourselves from phishing attacks, we need to understand that no means of electronic media is a hundred per cent safe, even though we can take steps to make it a better place for all of us.

How not to fall victim to phishing attacks?

The first rule of staying safe on the internet is to be very careful about the links that you are clicking. Do not share your OTP or passwords with anyone. These scammers create duplicate websites which look very similar to the original ones. The minute you enter your data like credentials and passwords on these sites, they get access and use it for their financial gains. However, if you are careful enough, you can spot grammatical errors or minor differences in the website that may help you differentiate it from the legitimate website. For example, on a banking website, the term ‘user’ can be misspelt as ‘usar’. However, these attackers are getting smarter by the day. These differences might be so minor that they might be unnoticeable to anyone in a hurry.

Always remember, anything that sounds too good to be true probably IS NOT true. We all have received emails with subject lines like ‘urgent, pay attention, your loan is approved, lottery, jackpot, award’, etc. These emails are usually spam and should be sent straightaway to the spam folder. The second rule is to be very careful while opening such emails, especially those you were not expecting to receive.

Prevention is better than cure

Third rule of being safe is that always change your passwords often. Passwords are like a toothbrush – do not share them with anyone and change them regularly.

You must also note that you should not click on random links or pop-up ads because they can steal your sensitive information. The best way to deal with pop-up ads is to have an ad blocker installed on your system. You can also close these ads by clicking the cross on them. Lastly, it is also important that your system has an updated firewall and malware protection software because they go a long way in protecting your devices from such attacks.
