1. Fake Wedding Invitation:
   • The attacker sends a message that looks like an invitation to a wedding or other event, often accompanied by attractive images, videos, or even a personalized message.
   • The message may claim that the recipient is invited to a wedding, which seems legitimate at first glance. It often includes an exciting offer, like an exclusive link to RSVP, gift details, or event photos.
2. Link to Download APK:
   • The message will usually contain a link that prompts the recipient to “click here” to download more details, such as the wedding details, event schedule, or RSVP form.
   • This link will direct the recipient to a page that encourages them to download an APK file (Android Package). This APK file is presented as a legitimate app but is, in fact, malicious software.
3. Malware Installation:
   • Once the user downloads and installs the APK, the malware is activated on the device. This malware can take several forms, including:
     • Spyware: Collects personal data like contacts, messages, and browsing history.
     • Ransomware: Locks the device or encrypts files and demands payment to unlock.
     • Banking Trojans: Steal login credentials for online banking or other apps.
     • Remote Access Trojans (RATs): Allows hackers to remotely control the victim’s device, access sensitive information, or use the device for malicious activities.
4. Further Exploitation:
   • The malware may also attempt to propagate by sending similar fake invites to the victim’s contacts, leading to further infection and widening the scope of the scam.
   • In some cases, the malware may also be used to steal the victim’s financial details or make unauthorized transactions.

Why It’s Dangerous:

• Social Engineering: The scam preys on social trust, using a familiar and often emotionally significant context (like a wedding) to lure the victim into trusting the message.
• Undetected Malware: Since the malware is delivered through an APK rather than an official app store, it often bypasses the security checks found on trusted platforms like Google Play Store, making it harder to detect.
• Wide Reach: WhatsApp is used by millions, and these scams can spread rapidly, affecting a large number of people, particularly those who are less tech-savvy.

How to Protect Yourself:

1. Don’t Download APKs from Unknown Sources: Always avoid downloading apps or files from links shared in messages from unknown or untrusted sources. Stick to official app stores like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
2. Enable App Verification: On Android devices, ensure that “Install from unknown sources” is disabled in the settings. This prevents APK files from being installed unless they are from trusted sources.
3. Use Reliable Security Software: Install and regularly update a trusted security app that can detect and block malicious software.
4. Verify the Source: If you receive a wedding invite or other unexpected message, confirm with the sender (via a phone call or direct contact) to verify that the invitation is legitimate before clicking on any links.
5. Be Cautious with Links: Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links, especially if they seem to offer “too good to be true” deals or include an urgent call to action.

What to Do if You’ve Fallen Victim:

• Disconnect from the Internet: If you suspect your phone has been compromised, disconnect from Wi-Fi and mobile data to prevent further communication with the malicious server.
• Run a Security Scan: Use a reputable antivirus app to scan and remove any malware.
• Factory Reset (if necessary): If the malware is persistent, you may need to factory reset your device (make sure to back up important data beforehand).
• Notify Contacts: If the malware has spread through your contacts, notify them so they don’t fall victim to the scam as well.

Conclusion:

In this video, we expose the Fake Job Offer Scam—a cunning scheme that preys on job seekers by offering bogus employment opportunities. Here’s how it unfolds:

How the Scam Works:

1. Initial Contact: Scammers reach out via email, direct messages, or LinkedIn, offering “high-paying jobs” with prestigious companies or even government agencies. The messages look professional, often using official logos and enticing job descriptions.
2. Request for Personal Information: Victims are asked to provide sensitive personal details, such as Social Security Numbers, bank details, or even copies of their passports, under the guise of a background check.
3. Upfront Fees: Scammers demand upfront payments for background checks, visa processing, training materials, or “security deposits,” promising reimbursement later.
4. Fake Job Offer Letter: Victims receive a convincing job offer letter, further solidifying the scam. Additional fees may be requested for office supplies or equipment.
5. No Job, No Payment: Once the payments are made, the scammers vanish, leaving victims without a job and out of pocket.

Yes, teach your children to lie! For their own safety.

If anyone unknown asks your children online if their parents are home- answer should always be a RESOUNDING YES!! Infact my mom is always in the same room. Yes my parents have my passwords- responses should be standard. Nobody can know child is home alone.

If they are waiting for you to pick up outside a coaching class, sports center- ideally ask them to wait inside a building and come outside only when you arrive. If they are going into a building for a class/ tuition teach them to just say- oh my mom is waiting upstairs or my uncle lives here he’s waiting at the lift upstairs.

If kids are playing at a park and a stranger approach to ask if they are alone, teach them to say- no my parents are right here, even wave to someone else randomly and say they are my parents. If they feel uncomfortable shout loud that they are not my dad, not my mom!! If someone tries to befriend them at a mall, same loud behavior.

Also teach them to be wary of adults asking children for help. Adults should ideally not be asking a small child for help- can you help me to my car, can you take this to my doorstep please. Response- No, my mom is right there waiting and RUN!

It’s okay to speak lies and bringing back to my mantra for child safety- TEACH THEM CRITICAL THINKING. NOT EVERY ELDER IS A GOD AND NOT EVERYONE CAN BE TRUSTED JUST COS THEY ARE OLDER IN AGE.

We recently conducted a cyber safety workshop at LG College of Economics, Mumbai. This was our third such workshop at the college, as delightful as always!

Students participated enthusiastically, shared their problems, trusted us with their queries. It was a fulfilling session for us especially when we saw that students were inspired to stand up against any odds. This young generation is extremely sharp, highly intelligent. These curious young adults need handholding, they are looking for someone to guide them in the right direction. At ‘Akancha Srivastava Foundation’, its our biggest joy to get an opportunity to show direction to our future generation.

There have been several reports of people complaining that a delivery person from an online portal showed up at their door and we have already spoken about in a previous video in detail that you can be scammed into given away an OTP or clicking on a phishing link by the person.

However today let’s talk about how it can be physically dangerous for you if you even open the door to entertain such a scamster. I read this story of a lady on Twitter where she had booked an appointment for some blood tests from a reputed lab and someone reached her doorstep 4 hours earlier to the designated slot and due to suspicion, she smartly refused to let the person in the house.

Now, most online shopping portals send us a text/ whatsapp when our parcel is arriving, several items also need an OTP that is generated closer to time of arrival. Always track if you are expecting a delivery before you open the door for a delivery person.

If you have a CCTV/ door camera great, you can always look through that screen and accept or refuse a delivery should you feel uncomfortable with the person’s body language. If they insist on having your signature, you could ask them to wait at the watchman’s desk in the building and offer to sign it there or in worse case, just refuse the parcel in any case.

So how does someone know if at all you have ordered something online- I have given a detailed explanation on how that happens please take a look. How did someone know if someone has requested a blood test? This is a very serious issue and don’t let it go if it ever happens with you. Either there is a hack in the system of that lab from where patient data is being leaked or someone from their office is leaking that data!

This is far more dangerous than what its sounding to you even now.

Your entire medical history, any vulnerability, sick family members, address, phone number everything is now out for misuse. Same is the case with fake delivery persons. The kind of items you frequently order are good indicators of your family members, age groups, income, of course your address and phone number are already online!

You just can’t deprive children of internet in today’s world. Technology is wonderful. Children have to know how to use technology mindfully instead. It would be truly constructive if parents work along with kids in setting healthy boundaries.

3 tips on how you can ensure that children are safe while using technology:

 FIRSTLY- BUILDING TRUST

Inclusion and not control should be the strategy. Do remember your childhood. Anything your parents banned you from using, you would definitely want to try!

Therefore, spend time together on the internet to identify your children’s interests instead. Learn about games they play, videos they watch, show them that you would like to genuinely know more.

We can’t brush things under the carpet. Children are so scared to speak to their own parents when things go wrong cos, we don’t talk to them like their confidantes.

In an overwhelming sexual assault cases against minors, the offender is known to the victim- Means neighbor/ relative/ shop keeper/ trainer. Child must know that even if they made a mistake online by talking to somebody unknown, trusting a stranger, they can come to you.

Please explain good touch bad touch online gently to them, find teachable moments

If they feel uncomfortable by any conversation even if it’s by an elder- they should be able trust to tell you

Secondly if possible please keep his/her machine in a place at home so that you can keep a watch on screen. When you are walking by, you can notice whom they are speaking with, what they are doing.

You don’t know if they are sweet talked by any predator

Remember that good children make bad choices at times.

THIRDLY– Build no tech time & device free zones for family

Children learn via curiosity & imitation. Set good example with your own behavior.

It’s very important that you spend little no technology time together. Build tech device free zones like dining table or living rooms, sit together as family, discuss things, read, talk to each other. If you are glued to technology then don’t expect kids to be any different

Exhibit mindful use with your own behavior.

Another training of Mumbai Police & another amazing feedback from the attendees.  impact of cybercrime litigation training conducted by ‘Akancha Srivastava Foundation’ for Mumbai Police on March 13^th, 2024 at the office of Additional Commissioner of Police, South Mumbai. This was supported by SBI Foundation.

Since cybercrime is ever evolving, even the application of different sections and laws are constantly shifting. Newer modus operandi requires smarter psychological analysis. Our laws do cover every single aspect of crimes/punishment but their combination is varying. Plus, the TRAI act is equally important while filing these cases.

Lots of pertinent questions were asked by the attendees which showed their keenness to learn. They also requested us for follow up trainings, which we will be happy to conduct.

Was wonderful to get glowing feedback from the attending officers. As you can see, they wish that we conduct such regular trainings, which we will be glad to.

Advocate Pankaj Bafna Sir, a well-respected cybercrime law expert, having a rich practical experience of arguing hundreds of cybercrime related cases at Mumbai High court graciously shared all the loopholes that the law enforcement needs to close so that the accused doesn’t get away.

Advocate Pankaj Bafna Sir shared several cases in recent times where owing to the missing details at documentation level, noting the right sections cos of which it becomes easier for the accused to get relief or makes it harder for the victim to get justice.

Please do watch the testimonials of attendees on how this training will help them practically in their duties. We have been requested a series of such trainings for more personnel which we are happy to conduct, including new topics as requested by the officers present. We are also keen to conduct SOP trainings for the investigating officers as they are the key point of contacts for receiving victim complaints.

We are glad that the Foundation of our country’s largest bank – SBI, that serves over one fourth of banking population of India all by itself believes that cyber security is a critical topic for one and all, especially for banks, customers.

Our thanks to the very polite, professional, friendly Mumbai Police for doing what they do 24×7 to keep financial capital of our country safe. We thank you for this gigantic responsibility that you fulfil with a smile.
