When a nation is under stress, children should not be left alone to make sense of the internet.

In times of war, conflict, or crisis, children are exposed to far more than headlines. They see disturbing visuals, panic-driven commentary, fake videos, dramatic rumours, emotional reactions, and constant updates they are too young to process. What reaches them online does not stay on the screen. It affects their sense of safety, their emotional balance, their sleep, their attention, and their trust in the world around them.

This is where adults must step in with maturity.

Children do not always know the difference between verified information, recycled content, manipulated visuals, fear-driven opinion, and outright misinformation. They can absorb panic before they understand context. They can believe false claims because a video looks real. They can keep checking for updates because anxiety pushes them to seek control. This is how overconsumption begins.

And overconsumption has a cost.

Constant exposure to crisis content can leave children fearful, restless, emotionally overwhelmed, distracted, and mentally exhausted. It can normalize distress. It can create confusion between awareness and obsession. It can make the internet feel like a place of permanent danger. During already difficult times, that level of exposure is not education. It is overload.

Parents and caregivers need to understand that protection during crisis is not only physical. It is also digital and emotional.

Children need help in three areas.

First, they need boundaries around consumption. Not every update is necessary for them. Not every video should be seen. Not every discussion should happen in front of them. Adults must reduce repeated exposure to disturbing content, limit doom-scrolling, and make sure children are not silently consuming fear for hours.

Second, they need help understanding truth. This is the time to teach them that not everything online is real, current, or trustworthy. A dramatic clip may be old. A voice note may be false. A forwarded message may be designed to create panic. A convincing visual may be edited or generated. Children must learn that truth online requires checking, not reacting.

Third, they need emotional reassurance. A child who keeps checking crisis updates is not always being curious. Sometimes the child is frightened. Sometimes the child is trying to feel prepared. Sometimes the child is carrying fear without words. That is why adults must create calm conversations, not just rules.

This is what responsible guidance looks like.

Do not let children consume crisis content without supervision.
Do not allow unrestricted exposure to disturbing visuals.
Do not treat every viral update as something they need to know.
Teach them to pause before believing or sharing.
Show them how to check official sources and trusted news.
Explain that forwarded content is not proof.
Tell them clearly that fear spreads fast online and facts often move slower.
Create fixed times for updates instead of constant checking.
Encourage breaks from screens.
Keep space for normal routine, conversation, and emotional grounding.

Children take cues from adults.
If adults keep forwarding panic, reacting loudly, and checking updates every minute, children absorb that behaviour.
If adults stay calm, verify facts, limit exposure, and communicate clearly, children learn digital discipline.

Helping children navigate the internet during crisis is not about hiding reality from them.
It is about protecting them from confusion, manipulation, fear overload, and unnecessary distress.
It is about teaching them that awareness must come with judgment.
It is about showing them that responsible internet use matters most when emotions are high.

This is not a small parenting issue.
This is a cyber safety issue, an emotional safety issue, and a public awareness issue.

Children should not have to carry the full weight of crisis through a screen.
Adults must help them process less, trust wisely, and stay anchored in facts.

Holiday Depression is real

The holiday season consistently shows a rise in emotional distress. This is not incidental. It is directly linked to how people consume digital content during this period. Social media becomes a highlight reel of curated happiness, success, relationships, and celebration. For many, this comparison quietly amplifies sadness.

People scroll through images of perfect families, exotic holidays, expensive gifts, and smiling faces. What remains unseen are the filters, the staging, and the emotional realities behind those frames. Constant exposure to these visuals creates a false benchmark. Individuals begin questioning their own lives, progress, relationships, and worth.

This comparison culture is not harmless. It affects self esteem, sleep, focus, and emotional stability. During the holidays, when people are already reflecting on the year gone by, digital comparison intensifies feelings of inadequacy and isolation. The brain does not distinguish between curated content and reality. It absorbs and internalizes both.

At Akancha Srivastava Foundation, we consistently highlight that excessive social media consumption impacts mental health. The holiday season demands even greater discipline. Reducing screen time is not withdrawal. It is self protection. Limiting exposure to triggering content allows space for clarity, rest, and emotional regulation.

This time also calls for returning to offline anchors. Hobbies that require presence. Activities that engage the mind and body. Reading, walking, creating, learning. These are not distractions. They are stabilizers. They help rebuild a sense of control and purpose that constant scrolling erodes.

Equally important is checking on people beyond social media interactions. A message, a call, a genuine conversation. Many struggle silently. Digital silence does not mean emotional stability. Awareness, empathy, and attentiveness are core pillars of cyber safety and emotional resilience.

The holidays are not a competition. They are a period that requires balance, boundaries, and responsibility in how we engage online. Mental health protection begins with conscious digital behavior. That awareness is not seasonal. It is essential.

Festive lights and celebrations bring joy for many.

But for some, this season can feel overwhelming. Being away from family, facing loneliness, or struggling through personal challenges can trigger a deep sense of isolation. While everyone else seems to be celebrating, some silently fight emotional battles.

Why Festive Depression Happens:

Loneliness:Students, professionals, or NRIs away from home feel disconnected when family traditions continue without them.

Social Media Illusion:Instagram reels and posts create a distorted reality of “perfect celebrations.” These are curated highlight reels, not daily truth—yet they trigger comparison and inadequacy.

Unresolved Pain:Financial strain, relationship stress, or grief feel sharper during festive gatherings.

Isolation in Noise:Even those surrounded by people can feel invisible if they’re struggling inside.

The Trap of Social Media:

Distorted Reality:Platforms showcase only the good moments, hiding the real struggles.

Mental Health Toll:This “comparison culture” increases sadness, anxiety, and loneliness.

Action Step:Limit scrolling. Mute or unfollow accounts that trigger negative emotions. Remember: what you see online is rarely the full picture.

How to Take Care of Mental Health This Season:

Step Back from Social Media:Reduce scrolling time. Unfollow or mute accounts that trigger negativity.

Exercise Daily:Physical activity releases endorphins, boosting mood and reducing stress. Even 20 minutes of walking can help.

Build Small Routines:Celebrate in your own way—cook a favorite meal, light a diya, or call a friend.

Create Small Rituals:Light a diya, cook your favorite dish, or video call a friend. Celebrate in your own way.

Practice Self-Compassion:Don’t compare your life to others’ curated feeds. Your journey is unique.

Mindful Activities:Meditation, reading, or hobbies can provide calm amidst noise.

Reach Out:Stay connected with people who genuinely care. A simple phone call can ease feelings of isolation.

Practice Gratitude:Focus on what is working in your life instead of what seems missing.

Why This Matters:
Festive depression is not weakness. It is a real emotional response to circumstances. Acknowledging it and taking action to protect your mind is essential. The season should not be about comparison—it should be about peace, health, and authentic connection.

Subscribe to our channel and share this video to spread awareness that it’s okay to not feel festive all the time—and that support is available.

Our Founder shares insights from a recent event

I participated in a well curated Listening Roundtable hosted by Snap Inc. in partnership with Young Leaders for Active Citizenship in Mumbai. The discussion focused on how teenagers use social media, their consumption patterns, safety frameworks, reporting mechanisms, and concrete steps to strengthen digital safeguards. The curation was thoughtful and deliberate, bringing together experts from education, mental health, child rights, technology, and digital policy.

There was a clear openness to meaningful dialogue. Stakeholders from diverse backgrounds engaged with sincerity, listened carefully to concerns, and demonstrated a firm intent to strengthen safety practices. The presence of teenagers added essential perspective. Their clarity and candour grounded the conversation in real lived experiences, reinforcing the urgency of building systems that genuinely work for young users.

I was assigned the table on When Digital Connections Hurt. This subject sits at the core of our work at the Akancha Srivastava Foundation, where we have trained millions across the country on cyber safety, digital resilience, and harm prevention. Our experience of working closely with law enforcement across India and handling case studies first hand strengthens our understanding of how these harms unfold in real scenarios and what robust interventions are required. Our discussion covered sexting, child grooming, cyber bullying, transparency in reporting processes, and the operational accountability needed to ensure that young people receive timely and effective support when they reach out for help.

A platform with the reach and influence of Snapchat is positioned to set powerful benchmarks for youth safety. With the right design interventions, it can educate users at scale and even cultivate digital heroes within its community who champion responsible behaviour, call out harm, and strengthen a culture of awareness. This potential was evident in the constructive spirit with which the company hosted the roundtable.

Such engagements signal a positive shift toward collaborative safety building. I appreciate the seriousness with which the dialogue was held and look forward to many more forums that bring together young people, experts, and platforms to advance the shared mission of creating safer digital spaces across the country.

But some formats thrive on conflict, humiliation, and manipulation. Reality shows built around constant fighting, scheming, and public shaming are not just “harmless drama.” They can have a measurable negative impact on mental health.

Impact of Toxic Reality Content:

Normalising Hostility:Viewers, including children, see aggression and manipulation being rewarded. This can desensitise audiences to bullying and promote toxic behaviour as entertainment.

Triggering Anxiety:Constant verbal fights and psychological games can trigger stress responses, especially in viewers already dealing with anxiety or depression.

Distorted Social Lessons:These shows present backstabbing and scheming as a survival skill, reinforcing unhealthy relationship models.

Celebrity Culture Pressure:Participants’ reputations are destroyed or sensationalised for ratings, encouraging public judgement and cyberbullying.

Copycat Behaviour:Youth sometimes imitate contestants, using similar language or aggression in their real lives, believing it to be acceptable.

Targeting Families for Content:Contestants frequently abuse or insult each other’s families to create drama, causing emotional distress to people outside the show and leaving audiences watching someone else’s pain.

Lying and Fabrication:Contestants exaggerate and spread falsehoods to gain advantage, creating impressions that are completely contrary to the truth, normalising deceit as a strategy.

Real-World Evidence:

The Dark Side of Reality TV: A Case Study of “Bigg Boss”highlights how these shows promote voyeurism, aggression, and emotional manipulation. (Read study)

Association Between Reality Television and Aggression: It Depends on the Showfound that viewers exposed to high-conflict reality content showed significantly higher anger levels. (Read paper)

Why This Matters:
This is not about one specific show. It is about the entire category of reality content that commodifies conflict. In a country where online harassment and bullying are already widespread, glorifying such behaviour on prime-time television sets a dangerous cultural tone.

What We Can Do:

Media Literacy:Teach audiences, especially children, to critically evaluate what they watch.

Healthy Alternatives:Promote shows that encourage skill-building, creativity, and collaboration.

Parental Guidance:Parents must monitor viewing habits and discuss with children what is healthy versus harmful behaviour.

Support for Participants:Contestants who face trolling and mental breakdowns post-show need counseling and rehabilitation, not just media exposure.

As shopping, travel, gifting, and donations surge, scammers weaponise urgency and emotion to steal money and data. This video shows exactly how they operate, the red flags you will see, and the steps that prevent loss.

How the scams work:

Fake e-commerce and flash sales
Cloned websites and social ads push “festive mega deals”, take payments, then deliver counterfeit goods or nothing. CERT-In warned about fake stores and delivery scams tied to seasonal sales.CERT-In

UPI and QR tricks
Fraudsters send “collect” payment requests, QR codes, or links that look like refunds, prizes, or overdue bills. NPCI has directed banks and apps to discontinue riskier P2P collect requests from 1 October 2025 to curb such abuse. The Times of India

Electricity bill disconnection threats
WhatsApp or SMS claims your power will be cut tonight unless you pay immediately through a link or number. Hyderabad authorities flagged this exact pattern in 2025.The Hans India

Courier and parcel fraud
Calls claim a package is held or illegal items were found in your name. You are pushed to share OTPs, install APKs, or pay “verification fees”. Police and media have documented the surge in parcel and courier scams.in+1

Fake charity drives
Fraudsters spoof NGO names during Diwali to solicit “urgent” donations on websites or UPI handles that vanish after payment. Consumer advisories highlighted this around Diwali 2024.Free Press Journal

“Personalised” AI phishing
Attackers now craft messages that reference your shopping habits or travel, making scams harder to spot during the 2025 festive rush. The Times of India+1

Why scams spike now:
High-volume transactions, discount hunting, and gifting urgency reduce caution. Seasonal spending creates ideal cover for phishing, social engineering, and fake merchant setups. News Mobile –

Red flags you must not ignore:
• Pressure to act now, pay now, or lose a deal
• Requests to install APKs or remote-access apps
• Payment via collect requests, QR sent by unknown numbers, or links shortened to hide the destination
• Donation appeals that cannot be verified on official NGO or government pages
• E-commerce sites with no physical address, no GST details, or only prepaid options

How to protect yourself:
• Pay only on verified platforms. Type the URL yourself. Do not click payment links from messages.
• Refuse “collect” requests and unknown QR codes. Initiate payments yourself inside the app. The Times of India
• Never install APKs sent over SMS or WhatsApp. They are a common malware vector during festive offers. The Times of India
• Verify charity details on official sites. Donate through verified handles only. Free Press Journal
• Use multifactor authentication on banking, email, and shopping accounts.
• Lock SIM and device. Keep OS and apps updated.
• Treat calls about parcels, electricity, KYC, or refunds as hostile until verified via official numbers. The420.in+1

If you are targeted:
• Do not pay. Capture evidence: screenshots, numbers, URLs, and transaction IDs.
• Report immediately at cybercrime.gov.in and to your bank for transaction reversal workflows.
• If credentials were exposed, change passwords, revoke sessions, and reset UPI PINs.
• For power, parcel, bank, or courier claims, call official helplines listed on the entity’s website, not the number that contacted you.

Real-world evidence:
• CERT-In advisory on fake festive shopping sites and delivery scams. CERT-In
• NPCI direction to end P2P UPI collect requests from 1 Oct 2025 to reduce fraud. The Times of India
• Hyderabad power disconnection WhatsApp scam alert. The Hans India
• Courier and parcel scam advisories and coverage. The420.in+1

You are not alone. Screenshots feel harmless. They are quick, convenient, and often used to prove a point, forward a message, or document a moment. But what if I told you that each of those screenshots could quietly expose more about you than you ever intended?

In today’s episode, I explain how something as ordinary as a screenshot can become a powerful tool in the hands of cybercriminals. Most people do not realise that screenshots often carry metadata, device details, timestamps, notification previews, and even partial location information depending on how and where the screenshot was taken. These clues can be pieced together to form a profile, timeline, or even used to identify a user.

Let’s break it down. Suppose you take a screenshot of a chat or payment screen. It may contain battery level, network provider, the time it was taken, your device type, and open notifications. These elements can confirm your identity, your phone model, your activity at a specific time, or even hint at your location. In sensitive or legal cases, this kind of traceability can be misused to harass, expose, or manipulate.

This becomes even more dangerous when screenshots are forwarded without edits. That casual image you share with friends or upload to social media can be copied, enhanced, and digitally examined. Tools available online can extract visible and invisible clues. Metadata like EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) can sometimes remain embedded, revealing when and where the screenshot was taken and on what device.

To stay safe, it is essential to take simple but effective precautions. Do not assume screenshots are harmless. Every image carries context, and that context can be weaponised in the wrong hands.

Stay Safe – Do This:

Crop out personal elements and notification bars before sharing

Disable location and EXIF data in your device settings

Avoid sharing screenshots of chats, transactions, or private content

Use screenshot protection features on supported devices

Double-check what appears in the background before capturing

Remember that forwarded screenshots are traceable and rarely anonymous

A Wake-Up Call from Misha Agrawal’s Tragedy

Misha Agrawal was just 24.

A bright, ambitious young woman—founder of Mish Cosmetics, a law graduate preparing to become a judge, and a content creator with over 112,000 Instagram followers. Just two days before her 25th birthday, Misha ended her own life.

Her family has since confirmed that she had been silently battling the pressure of declining followers on social media. What many might consider trivial—follower counts, likes, engagement metrics—had, for Misha, become a matter of worth, identity, and future. Her parents said she tied her value as a person and entrepreneur directly to the numbers on her screen. Her sister shared that Misha had even set a target of reaching 1 million followers as her phone wallpaper—something she had deeply internalized.

Despite her education, her entrepreneurial spirit, and a family that tried to reassure her constantly, Misha felt she was “not good enough” when the metrics didn’t match her expectations. That pain, invisible to most, eventually became unbearable.

As someone who works at the intersection of cyber safety, mental well-being, and digital resilience, I cannot stress this enough:

We are in a crisis of digital identity.

We must urgently redefine how we measure self-worth in the digital age. When social currency is treated as real currency, we risk building identities on sand—fragile, unstable, and subject to collapse at the slightest dip in metrics.

Let’s be clear: follower count is not a reflection of value. Likes do not validate purpose. No algorithm defines who you are.

We need to collectively build stronger emotional scaffolding for young adults navigating these high-pressure platforms. That includes open dialogue, real-world mentorship, and an honest reckoning with how social media distorts self-perception.

This is not just about individual resilience—it’s about a systemic reset.

To Misha’s family: I cannot imagine your pain. But I hear it. And I promise you, we will not let this be just another news story.

We will talk about it—in classrooms, universities, workplaces, and digital spaces where young people are silently struggling. Through the Akancha Srivastava Foundation, we will continue to conduct workshops on digital mental health, educate communities about the toxic side of algorithm-driven validation, and push for stronger emotional resilience training across all age groups.

We will amplify Misha’s story with dignity, not for attention, but to drive meaningful conversations around self-worth, social media pressures, and the urgent need for digital well-being frameworks.

We will keep reminding every young person out there: you are not your follower count. You are not the algorithm. You are human—and that is enough.

Please take care of your mental health.

Catfished by ‘Angel Priya’? Don’t Be the Next Victim

You’re Not in Love. You’re Being Hunted.

It starts with a random video call.
A pretty face. Flirty smile. Hearts flying on the screen.
You’re flattered. She’s into you.
Feels like a lucky moment—until it turns into a nightmare.

This is not affection. It’s a setup.

Behind that charming face is often a scammer—sometimes even a man—recording your reactions, capturing your vulnerability, and preparing to weaponise it against you through blackmail.

This is a cybercrime tactic we’ve seen repeatedly. And while this post addresses boys, the roles can absolutely be reversed. Women are targeted too. Predators don’t follow one script—they exploit wherever they see emotional or digital vulnerability.

These scams are designed to:

Catch you off-guard when you’re relaxed or lonely

Build false intimacy quickly

Coerce or threaten you once they’ve gained your trust

This is not a lapse in judgment. It’s digital manipulation at its worst.

Let’s stop glamorising unsolicited attention from strangers.
Genuine relationships don’t begin with secretive calls from unknown people.
Trust is never built in minutes, and love doesn’t start with flattery from someone you’ve never met.

If something feels off, it probably is.

Block early. Report immediately.
And if you’ve already been trapped—know that support is available. You’re not alone, and you’re not to blame. But silence only deepens the damage.

Need help?
TeamAkancha@gmail.com
AkanchaSrivastava.org
