Cybercriminals are now using AI-powered deepfake technology to manipulate voice and video in real-time, making fake calls look frighteningly real. They scrape voice and video samples from social media, past calls, or online meetings and use AI to clone them. Victims, caught off guard, believe they’re speaking to a trusted person and end up sharing money, sensitive details, or private information.

How Do You Protect Yourself?

1. Stay Calm—Scammers Thrive on Panic
   Criminals use urgency to make you act without thinking. Whether it’s a distressed family member or a fake emergency, take a moment before reacting.

2. Use a Safe Word
   Have a code or phrase that only you and your trusted contacts know. If a caller can’t confirm it, they aren’t who they claim to be.

3. Look for Glitches & Unnatural Expressions
   AI deepfakes aren’t flawless. Watch for blurry edges, unnatural blinking, or voice delays—these are red flags.

4. Hang Up & Call Back on a Verified Number
   Never continue a call if you have doubts. Disconnect and call the person directly using a saved, verified number.

5. Never Share Money, OTPs, or Sensitive Info
   No legitimate person or organization will ask for sensitive information over a video call. If someone does, it’s a scam.

6. Report Suspicious Calls Immediately

   • Frequency of Posts: Users are bombarded with daily posts, stories, and reels showcasing what they should be doing in their lives, whether it’s a specific ritual, affirmation, meditation, or guidance for “manifesting” success, love, or health.

2. Fear-Mongering:

1. • Prophecies and Predictions: Many influencers claim to have supernatural insight, offering prophecies or predicting life-altering events that might happen. They create a sense of urgency or fear, telling followers that their lives will be doomed unless they follow a specific ritual, exercise, or affirmation.
   • Manipulation: Scare tactics are used, such as “If you don’t follow this ritual, negative energy will overwhelm you,” or “This is the only way to align with the universe.” This plays on people’s fears, leading them to act impulsively.

3. Unproven Methods:

1. • Lack of Evidence: These influencers often promote rituals, exercises, or affirmations that have no scientific backing or proven efficacy. While spirituality and self-care practices can be valuable, there’s often little to no explanation as to why a specific ritual or practice should work. Followers may end up spending time, energy, and even money on practices that don’t contribute to their well-being.
   • Self-Proclaimed Gurus: Many of these accounts are run by individuals who claim to have spiritual insight or life-changing wisdom but lack the credentials, training, or practical experience to back their advice.
   • Many self-proclaimed healers on social media rely on fear-mongering tactics to manipulate their followers into believing they are in urgent need of their services. They often use alarming language, suggesting that unless followers adopt their rituals, practices, or advice, they will face negative outcomes such as bad luck, financial loss, or even health problems. This tactic creates a sense of panic and urgency, making individuals feel as though they are powerless to improve their lives without following these “quick-fix” solutions. What these healers often fail to disclose is that their offerings have no scientific basis and are tailored to prey on emotional vulnerabilities or moments of personal crisis. By tapping into people’s fears, insecurities, or feelings of helplessness, these frauds exploit their trust to sell products, courses, or sessions that promise instant transformation but rarely deliver meaningful results. Their tactics are not about true healing or empowerment, but about profit, and they exploit the very vulnerabilities they claim to heal.

4. Constant Pressure to Follow Trends:

Influencers who promote extreme or clickbait spiritual advice often get more attention, leading to a continuous cycle of individuals feeling pressured to adopt these practices to stay “spiritually aligned.”
   • Tactical Self-Promotion: These self-proclaimed “gurus” often promote paid services like one-on-one sessions, courses, or even products (such as crystals, oils, or books) that supposedly support their teachings.

1. • Mental Health Impact: Constant exposure to these overwhelming messages can cause confusion, guilt, and even stress, particularly if individuals feel they are falling short by not following every trend or ritual that is shared.
   • Compromised Well-Being: The excessive focus on “healing” can detract from addressing real-life mental health or personal development challenges, leaving individuals feeling lost or overwhelmed instead of empowered.

Why It’s Harmful:

1. Loss of Discernment: People may lose their ability to differentiate between what’s genuinely helpful versus what’s harmful or unsubstantiated. They may adopt practices that aren’t aligned with their true needs or values.
2. Financial and Emotional Drain: The pressure to buy into the rituals, books, online sessions, or crystals promoted by influencers can lead to financial and emotional exhaustion.
3. Spiritual Bypassing: Instead of addressing real-life problems or emotional challenges, some individuals may be led to “bypass” deeper, more meaningful work and instead focus on quick fixes that don’t offer long-term growth or healing.

How to Protect Yourself:

1. Cultivate Discernment:

   • The attacker sends a message that looks like an invitation to a wedding or other event, often accompanied by attractive images, videos, or even a personalized message.
   • The message may claim that the recipient is invited to a wedding, which seems legitimate at first glance. It often includes an exciting offer, like an exclusive link to RSVP, gift details, or event photos.
2. Link to Download APK:
   • The message will usually contain a link that prompts the recipient to “click here” to download more details, such as the wedding details, event schedule, or RSVP form.
   • This link will direct the recipient to a page that encourages them to download an APK file (Android Package). This APK file is presented as a legitimate app but is, in fact, malicious software.
3. Malware Installation:
   • Once the user downloads and installs the APK, the malware is activated on the device. This malware can take several forms, including:
     • Spyware: Collects personal data like contacts, messages, and browsing history.
     • Ransomware: Locks the device or encrypts files and demands payment to unlock.
     • Banking Trojans: Steal login credentials for online banking or other apps.
     • Remote Access Trojans (RATs): Allows hackers to remotely control the victim’s device, access sensitive information, or use the device for malicious activities.
4. Further Exploitation:
   • The malware may also attempt to propagate by sending similar fake invites to the victim’s contacts, leading to further infection and widening the scope of the scam.
   • In some cases, the malware may also be used to steal the victim’s financial details or make unauthorized transactions.

Why It’s Dangerous:

• Social Engineering: The scam preys on social trust, using a familiar and often emotionally significant context (like a wedding) to lure the victim into trusting the message.
• Undetected Malware: Since the malware is delivered through an APK rather than an official app store, it often bypasses the security checks found on trusted platforms like Google Play Store, making it harder to detect.
• Wide Reach: WhatsApp is used by millions, and these scams can spread rapidly, affecting a large number of people, particularly those who are less tech-savvy.

How to Protect Yourself:

1. Don’t Download APKs from Unknown Sources: Always avoid downloading apps or files from links shared in messages from unknown or untrusted sources. Stick to official app stores like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
2. Enable App Verification: On Android devices, ensure that “Install from unknown sources” is disabled in the settings. This prevents APK files from being installed unless they are from trusted sources.
3. Use Reliable Security Software: Install and regularly update a trusted security app that can detect and block malicious software.
4. Verify the Source: If you receive a wedding invite or other unexpected message, confirm with the sender (via a phone call or direct contact) to verify that the invitation is legitimate before clicking on any links.
5. Be Cautious with Links: Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links, especially if they seem to offer “too good to be true” deals or include an urgent call to action.

What to Do if You’ve Fallen Victim:

• Disconnect from the Internet: If you suspect your phone has been compromised, disconnect from Wi-Fi and mobile data to prevent further communication with the malicious server.
