Akancha Srivastava, Founder of ‘Akancha Against Harassment’ conducted a workshop with the Anantnag Police Force on April 7th. Anantnag is the third-largest city in Kashmir and has fearlessly fought times of turbulence.

However, the fight today is not fought just offline but also online. The workshop gave the police force insight into the world of cybercrime and how to fight it together with hope, empathy, awareness and action steps.

Together, we hope to fight cyber crimes and make cyberspace safe for all – irrespective of their gender, race, religion or where they live.

IG Krishna Prakash Sir was speaking to a young audience at Wilson College, Mumbai in February where he inspired with his words of courage & strength.

 

Reciting words from poet Faiz, he said- Bol ke lab azad hain tere…Meaning that speak your mind while you are alive, while you are able. IG Krishna Prakash Sir asserted that whether in spirit or body, we are only as alive as our belief.

 

Sir said that if not anything else, atleast our inner most self would be relieved of the burden we carry if we spoke up. Thoughts that are not spoken in life time are like a mountain of burden we carry forever. Don’t live with that.

 

Often, even our family and friends may not support us when we raise our voice against injustice. That can be very tough times for the person trying to voice their opinion but don’t worry, there are many of us here who are available to help. Just have to courage to stand up, we will back you.

 

IG Krishna Prakash Sir also spoke about our initiative, our helpline and how we can be approached for any help required. He insisted that we need to reclaim our lives from any incidents & not let it define us.

]]> Be Fearless-  says Akancha Srivastava!

 

At a workshop in Delhi University, Akancha spoke to young students who shared their unpleasant experiences. She had one key learning from her own life to share- Be fearless!!

 

Akancha believes that we need to reclaim our life from any hurt, abuse, unhappiness by speaking up & standing up. If we don’t do that, we not only encourage the abusers, we also live with trauma which never goes away! Therefore, be fearless, speak up.

 

While we totally understand that this may not be easy for everyone. There are many social factors, especially in India where we fear even sharing any such incident with our family. But, change has to start from us! Suppose there is a relative who misbehaves with you, how do you know they are not misbehaving with others too?

 

It takes a lot of courage to be fearless, to speak up. We totally understand that but if you need any help in speaking to authorities or professionals, please write to us. We are here to stand by you! You are not alone.

 

Stay Aware, Stay Safe.

Workshop

In our Delhi University workshops, one at Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, parents of students were also part of the session.

This was a very interesting session as often parents and children are on very different pages when it comes to use of technology. They are using very tech for very different purposes even on same social media platforms. We asked the parents if they understood what it means to be cyber safe.

 

Where is the gap?

One consistent complaint we get is that parents feel children are glued to their phones and children feel that parents don’t appreciate how important their use of technology is. This creates a lot of friction & misunderstanding.

Akancha addressed this issue and shared the importance of spending “inclusive” time on internet together. This will help parents understand interests of the children & also calm their anxieties. When they don’t know what kids are doing on the internet, they get worried. They wonder whom the children are interacting with or what they are playing. This leads of confusion in even understanding concept of being cyber safe.

 

Spend time together online

Spending time together also gives bonding time. Parents can learn about new games, apps, learn how to verify fake news etc

Firstly, bullying, being harsh or mean to somebody online can get you in trouble. Please also note that bullying leads to suicidal & depressing thoughts in victims. Do you really want to be responsible for taking a life due to your actions?

Think carefully before you type or express your views.

For those who may have suffered bullying, please speak up. Share it with your teachers, friends, family, someone trusted. Most importantly, do not take social media too seriously. Its only one small part of your life.

Over 1000+ audience took active part in this interactive workshop where we touched upon many topics that usually go unspoken with young adults like morphing, grooming, chat etiquette, being inclusive in the online behavior.

We also spoke about how technology is a wonderful thing but how its usage determines its repercussions. Young budding entrepreneurs had a lot of questions to ask.

Delhi School Of Management Studies is a part of Delhi Technological University, Delhi University.

We conducted a cyber safety workshop at their beautiful campus in Rohini on 8th August, 2019. It is an experience we will carry for life for the immensely positive energies of the students, support of the faculty & identification of a few student champions.

It’s amazing that the younger generation is willing to accept the right from wrong, be mindful on technology & exhibit their passion unapologetically towards social causes. We really hope that this generation will take the cause much further & they have all our support in this process.
